Why Golfers Need to Build Their Core
Why Golfers Need to Build Their Core

Reduce Injuries, Improve Your Club Head Speed, and More
Has an injury affected your golf swing? Are you looking to improve your overall golf performance? Good news: the team at Achieve Physical Therapy is here to help!
Many people don’t recognize the role physical therapy can play in helping athletes improve their game–and that includes golfers. Our team will work with you to identify biomechanical issues, muscular weaknesses, and other concerns that might increase your injury risk and affect your golf swing. More importantly, we’ll provide you with the tools you need to address these problems head-on.
One area we often focus on is the core. Golf swings are complex, whole-body movements–but they start from the core. Today, we want to explore why core strength is so important to golfers.
Why Does a Strong Core Help Golfers?
A strong core is more than just having six-pack abs. In fact, the word “core” refers to several different muscles, some of which you can’t even see. All these muscles–which include the abdomen, pelvis, back, and diaphragm muscles–wrap around the spine and help your body coordinate effectively to perform complex movements (like a golf swing).
Your core muscles are critical in stabilizing one area (such as your lower back and pelvis) to allow a different region to move (such as your mid and upper back). Weaknesses or imbalances in the core can lead to injuries in the lower back, hips, and potentially any other body area used during the swing.
Although it may appear to be a simple activity, a golf swing can generate the same force as a football player hitting a tackling dummy. The importance of properly working spinal joints in collaboration with the stabilizing ability of the core muscles can not be overstated.
That’s why knowing how to train the core correctly can be the difference between an injury and hitting the longest drive of your life. A good core training program can significantly increase ball speed, carry yardage, and total yardage. But you ignore your core at your own risk.

The Link Between Core Strength and Golf Injuries
Most golf injuries occur due to overuse or poor swing mechanics. A golf swing generates significant rotational, compressive, and shear forces on the spine. A weak core can’t handle these forces, especially when combined with joint mobility restrictions.
For example, core weakness can lead to loss of proper postures, excessive side bending, and over-rotation of the spine. In addition, poor trunk control from core weakness may lead to restricted hip mobility and, if practiced repeatedly, can cause an overuse injury.
Fortunately, the team at Achieve Physical Therapy understands the demands of golf so that we can create a customized core strengthening program specifically for your needs!

What To Expect From Your PT Sessions
During your first visit, we’ll start with a comprehensive evaluation, including a thorough health history and whole-body movement assessment. This assessment helps us identify your unique joint range of motion and strength and how your joints and muscles move in relation to one another.
From there, we’ll create a personalized program to address any issues that might increase your injury risk (or affect your game). While every program is different, we generally include the following:
- Mobility training, particularly in the spine and hips, to enhance movement and reduce strain on the lower back
- Targeted core exercises that engage the key muscles vital to golf performance
- Postural training to ensure you have a stable stance for a more consistent sing
- Evaluation and correction of your swing mechanics to help prevent injury and improve performance
- Injury-preventing strategies, such as teaching you how to properly brace your core when swinging

Looking to Improve Your Golf Game? Improve Your Mobility
You take your golf game seriously–and you’re always looking to improve your score. One area of fitness you may not have considered is mobility, which impacts everything from swing mechanics to balance and endurance.
Why Mobility Matters in Golf
Golf requires coordinated, fluid movements that depend on a good range of motion, strength, and balance. Limited mobility restricts these movements, leading to poor performance and setting you up for a higher likelihood of injury. Here are a few of the ways mobility directly impacts your game:
- Improves Swing Mechanics: Good mobility in the hips, spine, and shoulders allows for a full and controlled swing, leading to more consistent shots.
- Prevents Problematic Compensation Patterns: Poor mobility can affect your body’s mechanics and lead to compensation patterns in which you overuse certain muscles–a process that reduces efficiency and increases muscle strain.
- Boosts Power: Increasing the range of motion in your hips and thoracic spine generates greater torque, improving your swing speed and distance.
- Enhances Balance: Proper mobility helps stabilize your posture during your swing, improving accuracy and consistency.
